Gums when infected can ultimately result in Gum Abscess.
Causes
- Inadequate oral hygiene.
- Impaired medical fitness: If an individual is medically compromised like diabetes, it can increase chances of gum infection.
- Hormonal imbalance: As seen in pregnancy or puberty. This can also increase chances of gum infection and pyorrhea.
Symptoms
Gum abscess can present with some or all of these symptoms:
- Pus discharge from gums.
- Mild to moderate pain in teeth and gums.
- In case of acute gum abscess, gums can be swollen, red, moderate to severely painful and may be associated with fever, body ache etc.
- Bad breath.
- Unpleasant stickiness and bitter taste sensation in mouth.
- Other symptoms of pyorrhea may be present.
Treatment
Treatments employed in pyorrhoea are used in the treatment of gum abscess as well. Use antibiotics and pain killers may be required.
